Bike Polo Rules

Hardcourt:
Official rules are contained here: League of Bike Polo Rules, but are generally:

  • Teams have 3 people on each side
  • Any bike will do as long as it is safe to ride
  • Helmets are required
  • Play to 5 points or a time limit set at beginning of match (usually 10-15 minutes)
  • If your foot touches any horizontal surface other than your bike (the ball, a mallet, other people, etc) you must leave play and “tap out” at a pre-determined location on the court – usually near mid-court.
  • Contact is limited to like-like (body-body, bike-bike, mallet-mallet)
  • In order for a shot to count it must have originated off the tip of the mallet, not the side or shaft.
  • Court is about 60′ wide and 130′ long hard asphalt or concrete
  • Goals are about 6′ wide and 3′ tall
  • Have fun and don’t be a jerk.
Grass:
There are no “official” rules for grass, but here is how we play it:
  • Teams are evenly split at the beginning of the evening – no more than 5 on 5
  • Any bike will do as long as it is safe to ride
  • Helmets are required
  • Play to 10 points, must win by 2, stop at 15
  • If you foot down you must leave play and ride two full revolutions of your pedals before returning to play
  • No purposeful contact is allowed.  Incidental is unavoidable, but no mallet hacking or t-boning
  • Court is a grassy field about 50 yards wide and 100 yards long
  • Goals are about 10′ apart and have no height limit
  • Have fun and don’t be a jerk!
